Enabling “ease of living” for residents of cantonment areas, a digital platform – school management system (SMS) has been implemented in 194 schools under the guidance of 62 cantonment boards in the fifteen states. The Direction Générale du Domaine de la Défense (DGDE), Ministry of Defense has developed the SMS internally, for the benefit of 61,943 pupils and 1,965 teachers and aimed at the inhabitants of the cantonments and neighboring municipalities. The system currently operates in Middle English and is being developed to provide services in local languages as well.

SMS allows parents to apply for school admission online, track their wards’ progress, grievances, pay fees digitally, and more. The SMS initiative is user-friendly and enables “ease of service” to cantonment residents. The process for issuing the transfer certificate has also been simplified for parents.

The following online facilities are provided in the school management system:

  • Registration and Admissions
  • Issuance of transfer certificate
  • Duties and homework
  • Complaint and incident reports
  • Filing of fees and charges
  • Academic performance and student grades
  • Schedule and attendance
  • Notes and newsletter
  • Notifications and circulars of school activities
  • SMS and email notification to parents regarding their wards’ performance and progress

The SMS is receiving encouraging responses from parents, teachers, students and other stakeholders. For the ease of parents, a help desk has also been provided by cantonment councils. It has become the most unique user-friendly system offered on a single platform.

The cantonment councils provide various online citizen services to more than 20 lakh residents in 62 cantonments across the country through the eChhawani project of the General Directorate of Defense Domains (DGDE) of the Ministry of Defence.
